“I’ll be home for Christmas…if only in my dreams.” This single line from this classic Christmas song holds true for some overseas Pinoys. That’s why instead of being a joyous occasion, Christmastime becomes a source of sadness and yearning for them. But while it’s ok to feel a little down, you shouldn’t let it affect your Christmas cheer. Here are a few ways to lessen the Christmas blues.
1.Celebrate with your family via webcam. Phone calls, instant messages or emails may also cheer you. Today’s technology allows you to communicate with loved ones real time. Why not join them for Noche Buena?
2.Hold a party for other overseas Pinoys in your area. Having a support group will help ease the homesickness. Knowing that they suffer as much as you do will half your sorrow.
3.Do a good thing for others. Doing a good deed, especially for strangers, can have a very uplifting effect. After all, isn’t giving the true spirit of Christmas?
So the next time you hear Bing Crosby’s song (or any Christmas song at that), don’t feel so bad. Take time to reflect on your blessings and the reasons why you are overseas. Knowing that you’re doing it for your loved ones makes it worthwhile.
