How to spot an illegal recruitment scam
It’s a sad fact that a lot of Filipinos who want to work abroad for their families are deceived by illegal recruiters. That’s why it’s very important to be wise in choosing foreign recruitment companies. Here are a few tips:
- Watch out for job offers that sound too good to be true. Most of the time, they probably are. Do your research on the job you wish to apply for. Is it licensed by PEOA? Ask for references—who has the recruitment company helped so far? Double-check the company’s legitimacy with the Better Business Bureau. Never settle for a tourist visa.
- Illegal recruiters prefer to operate through mail or phone only. They usually give post office addresses instead of office addresses.
- Look out for companies that ask for advanced fees. Don’t be afraid to ask questions like, “What is this fee for? Is it refundable?” Avoid paying cash via mail. And avoid giving your bank account details.
When your family’s future is at stake, it pays to be wise.
