Measles cases threaten to rise this summer
According to the Department of Health (DoH), there have been measles outbreaks in several areas in the country. From January 1 to February 15, DoH has recorded 954 cases, and it may continue to rise this summer.
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease. A victim will show flu-like symptoms such as runny nose, coughs, fever and weakness, as well as red spots all over the body. It usually goes away on its own, but it may cause complications among people with compromised immune systems.
To prevent measles, DoH recommends parents and children to avail of free vaccinations in health centers and public hospitals. Covering the mouth and nose when sneezing and frequent hand washing are important to avoid the spreading of measles. As much as possible, crowded areas must be avoided.
