Summer’s dangers

Summer is all about having fun under the sun. But there are a number of health risks to watch out for this hot season. Here are some of them:

  1. Sun related risks. These include sunburn, heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Avoid staying out under the sun for too long. Apply sunscreen frequently. Drink lots of fluids to keep your body hydrated.
  2. Water-related diseases. Summer and El Niño are drying up our water supplies, and the lack of safe drinking water leads to more cases of diarrhea and cholera. It’s best to drink bottled mineral water. Or, use a water filter or distiller. You may also choose to boil water instead.
  3. Mosquito-borne diseases. People usually spend more time outdoors during summer. So to avoid diseases like dengue or malaria, it’s important to apply insect repellant before going out.

As long as you know what to do, these health risks shouldn’t stop you from enjoying summer.
