The cold weather is making me sick!
It’s October and there’s a chill in the air. Feeling under the weather lately? Don’t blame the cold. Well, at least not altogether.
The cold weather itself does not cause colds or flu. However, because of it, people are cooped up with other people inside enclosed spaces (such as houses or schools). This proximity makes viruses and bacteria spread faster.
Unfortunately, the cold weather may affect other areas of your health. For instance, it may trigger asthma attacks. Also, people forget that just because it’s cold outside, it doesn’t mean you can’t get sunburn. Another thing: research shows that people tend to overeat when it’s cold to keep their bodies warm (metabolism) and maybe because it’s much cozier to stay in bed than exercise.
Whatever the weather, practice healthy living. Remember to exercise regularly, get ample sleep, and eat healthy food. Slather on sunscreen before going out. And remember to practice proper hygiene—wash your hands often, and cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.
Stay healthy!
