Typhoon health risks
Typhoon season has begun. Are you and your family prepared for the health diseases it brings?
- Leptospirosis. This is a deadly bacterial infection caused by exposure to floodwaters contaminated with animal waste (such as rat’s urine). As much as possible, avoid wading through floods, especially if you have an open wound.
- Dengue. Dengue mosquitoes thrive in stagnant water. Remember to clean water containers and roof gutters to prevent them from breeding.
- Diarrhea. Flooding tend to contaminate sources of safe drinking water. Drink only mineral or boiled water. Wash your hands carefully before and after handling foods and using the bathroom.
- Flu. The flu virus spreads via sneezing and coughing. Aside from cold-like symptoms, it also causes nausea, vomiting, and stomach pains. Keep away from sick people and wash your hands frequently.
- Fungal infections. Fungi thrive in moist places and may also spread through floods. Proper hygiene is important.
Stay well!
