WHEN SHOULD YOU NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE
Do not take this medicine:

  • If you are younger than 14 years old.
  • If you are allergic to mefenamic acid, aspirin, and other NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen). Mefenamic acid, just like other NSAIDs, may cause severe allergic reaction. Symptoms may include:
  • Hives (elevated, whitish or reddish patches on the skin with severe itching or pricking sensations)
  • Shock (anaphylactic) (a hypersensitivity reaction resulting to generalized skin lesions and itchiness, followed by low BP and often accompanied by difficulty of breathing)
  • Facial swelling
  • Skin reddening
  • Asthma (wheezing)
  • Skin rash
  • Skin blisters
  • If you have active ulceration or chronic inflammation of either the upper or lower GI tract.
  • Right before or after heart surgery.
  • If you have a history of stroke, heart attack, uncontrolled high BP, or CHF.
  • If you have or have ever had kidney disease.
  • If you develop signs and symptoms of liver abnormality (e.g., jaundice), stop taking this medicine and consult a doctor.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is especially important not to use mefenamic acid during pregnancy (particularly late in pregnancy) because it may cause problems in the unborn child or complications during delivery.

UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS
Undesirable effects from the use of mefenamic acid are not common, but they may occur. Tell your doctor if you experience any undesirable effect.

Mefenamic acid may cause stomach and intestinal side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, eating disorder (anorexia), heartburn, gastritis, gassiness, and peptic ulcer.

Skin rashes have been observed. There have been rare reports of SJS, Lyell’s syndrome, and erythema multiforme which are serious types of allergy and may occur without warning. Symptoms of these serious types of allergy include multiple skin lesions, itching, fever, and joint pains.

Mefenamic acid may cause blurred vision, eye irritation, and rarely, reversible loss of color vision.

Mefenamic acid may also cause kidney problems and harmful effects to the liver. There have been occasional reports of undesirable effects involving the blood and blood-forming tissues. Mefenamic acid may prolong bleeding time.

There have been occasional reports of drowsiness, nervousness, dizziness, fatigue, anxiety, and insomnia.

Other undesirable effects are glucose intolerance in diabetic patients, low BP, asthma, palpitation, indigestion, and inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).

WHAT OTHER MEDICINE OR FOOD SHOULD BE AVOIDED WHILE TAKING THIS MEDICINE?
When taken with blood thinning (anticoagulant) medicines (e.g., warfarin, dicumarol) or together with other NSAIDs, mefenamic acid may cause stomach and intestinal bleeding, prevent platelet aggregation, and prolong bleeding time.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU MISS A DOSE?
If you miss a dose, take the next dose if still needed for pain and the subsequent dose every 8 hrs thereafter.

Do not double the dose.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE
Convulsion appears to be the most regularly observed symptom during overdosage, although vomiting, diarrhea, kidney impairment, and blood coagulation defects may also occur occasionally.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE TAKEN MORE THAN THE RECOMMENDED DOSAGE?
If you have taken more than the recommended dosage, consult a doctor or contact a Poison Control Center right away.

  • Take more than the recommended dose or take more than the directed duration of treatment.
  • If stomach upset occurs, take this medicine with food or milk.
